The early morning air was crisp, dew clinging to the verdant leaves as faint mist lingered in the lush forest. At the foot of the silent mountain, a woman in white stood, her expression desolate.

Ever since Qin Yao had woken from that nightmare in the dead of night, her heart had been in turmoil. She couldn’t stop worrying about Ye Lingyun’s safety, unable to find peace or fall back asleep.

No matter how she tried to clear her mind and meditate to cultivate, the unease in her heart only grew stronger as the night passed into day. When dawn broke, the feeling had intensified, wrapping around her like a suffocating shroud.

As a mother for the first time, Qin Yao could no longer suppress the longing in her heart. She decided to secretly leave the Yaochi Holy Land and make her way to see her child.

However, as she neared the outskirts of the remote mountain village, a deep unease settled over her.

It was too quiet—eerily, unnaturally quiet.

Not a single sound came from the village, and the air carried a faint, metallic tang of blood.

A shiver ran through her slender frame as a horrifying possibility crossed her mind. Her face turned ashen, her pupils trembling violently.

Buzz!

A dazzling brilliance enveloped her as her figure vanished in an instant. Moments later, she reappeared above the courtyard of the family who had been fostering her child, in the northwest corner of the village.

What lay before her was devastation.

A dilapidated thatched hut, crumbled courtyard walls, a collapsed wooden door.

Everywhere she looked, there was desolation. Severed limbs and scattered remains littered the ground, pools of blood staining the earth. The stench of blood was overwhelming, turning the entire village into a scene of crimson horror.

Even without witnessing the events firsthand, the gruesome aftermath was enough to paint a vivid picture of the village’s tragic fate.

It was nothing short of a living hell.

“No…”

“How could this happen..?”

Qin Yao’s spiritual senses swept across the entire village in an instant, and what she discovered left her completely numb.

Everyone was dead. Every single soul in the village.

And her child—could it be…

Realizing this, she froze in place for a long moment before her thin shoulders began to tremble violently.

Her once-radiant face turned utterly ashen, despair filling her tearful eyes.

Panicked, she descended into the ruined courtyard and began searching frantically.

The thatched hut? Nothing.

The firewood pile? Nothing.

The water vat? Still nothing.

Desperation mounting, she unleashed a powerful surge of spiritual energy, her divine senses scouring every inch of the village.

Not a single corner was spared in her search.

But still, there was nothing.

With a thud, Qin Yao collapsed to the ground, her strength utterly drained.

Her eyes turned red as she clutched the hem of her robe tightly, her fingers trembling uncontrollably.

“It’s my fault… I caused this… I killed my own child…”

A faint, anguished whisper escaped her lips.

At that moment, waves of regret surged through her, threatening to drown her remaining sliver of rationality.

Life’s greatest joys and sorrows had struck her with devastating suddenness, shattering her heart completely.

Half a day later, a disheveled Qin Yao met Ye Chang in the dense forest outside the city.

Due to their identities, their relationship had to remain hidden from the world. They had arranged a secret way to contact each other, and this secluded forest was the agreed meeting point.

When Ye Chang saw her, he immediately noticed her unusual demeanor and asked, “Yao’er, what’s wrong?”

Qin Yao’s eyes, filled with despair, fixed on him as she replied, “I went to see our son.”

Ye Chang frowned slightly at her words, “How is he doing these days?”

He didn’t seem overly concerned about the child, his tone soft as he continued, “Yao’er, don’t worry. When the one-year period is up, we’ll bring him back. Once he’s in the marquis’ estate, I promise I’ll give him everything he deserves—he’ll be cherished and adored.”

In Ye Chang’s mind, Qin Yao’s current distress was merely due to her longing for their son, urging him to bring the child back earlier than planned. However, to Ye Chang, this matter was far too delicate to risk exposure. He tried to comfort her, intending to persuade her to wait.

But reality often defied expectations.

Qin Yao’s next words left him utterly stunned.

“But… the child is gone. Everyone in the village is dead.”

As she spoke, tears streamed down her face, and she broke into uncontrollable sobs.

“What did you say?!”

Ye Chang’s expression changed drastically. His eyes widened in disbelief as he stared at Qin Yao, his voice rising in urgency.

“How is that possible?!”

Qin Yao said nothing, her weeping confirming the grim truth.

My son… is gone?

Ye Chang’s tall figure swayed, his heart heavy with remorse as he looked at the heartbroken woman before him.

He hadn’t anticipated that his decision to send their child to the village would lead to this tragedy.

If he had known this would happen, he would never have agreed to foster the child in such a vulnerable place.

His fists clenched tightly within his sleeves as guilt and regret overwhelmed him.

“This is all my fault. Why did I agree to send the child away? I caused his death, leaving him to be devoured by beasts.”

Qin Yao, frail and distraught, hugged her knees and sobbed bitterly.

“Our son was just a baby, so innocent and defenseless. He should have grown up safe under our protection, but now his life has been stolen from him.”

“Ye Chang, don’t you think what we’ve done to him is far too cruel? He was just a child… what did he ever do to deserve this?”

Her mournful cries echoed through the forest, a sound of heartbreak and despair.

Ye Chang crouched beside her, placing a hand on her trembling shoulder. He opened his mouth to speak words of comfort but found himself unable to say anything. Instead, he silently stayed by her side.

After a long time, as Qin Yao’s sobbing began to subside, Ye Chang helped her to her feet and said in a deep voice, “I’ll go take a look.”

With that, he took to the skies, his figure streaking toward the ruined village, burdened with regret and grief.
