Ling Xiao looked at Yang Linlin and immediately explained: “It’s fine, I’m not blaming you.”

“Okay.” Yang Linlin nodded and continued eating.

Faced with her strange behavior, Ling Xiao couldn’t help but feel curious.

So after the meal, Ling Xiao deliberately asked: “Are you afraid of me?”

Yang Linlin, who was cleaning up the dishes, froze for a moment before quickly shaking her head: “No.”

“That’s good. Actually, we don’t need to be so formal with each other.” Ling Xiao explained.

After hearing this, Yang Linlin nodded: “Okay.”

With that, she went into the kitchen to wash the dishes.

Ling Xiao could tell she had something on her mind, but he didn’t press her about it directly.

He returned to his room, took out some books, and began studying.

Since memories from the dreamscape could be retained, he could make good use of this time to enrich himself.

This way, during one night’s sleep, he could gain 100 more days of study time than others.

He wasn’t picky – he read all kinds of books.

Covering topics from finance and management to various other fields of knowledge, he went through them one by one.

If he didn’t understand something the first time, he would read it a second time.

The saying “read a book a hundred times and its meaning will become clear” was always true.

While Ling Xiao was reading, Yang Linlin made some sweet soup.

She carefully ladled a bowl and planned to bring it to Ling Xiao’s room.

When Yang Linlin reached the doorway and saw Ling Xiao reading seriously, she was somewhat surprised.

One might even say astonished.

During an apocalypse, when only two people remained in the entire world, this young man before her could still calm his mind enough to read.

In that moment, Yang Linlin felt a certain admiration in her heart.

“Knock, knock, knock!”

Ling Xiao turned his head at the sound.

He saw Yang Linlin holding a bowl and saying: “Brother Ling Xiao, I made some sweet soup. Would you like to try some?”

“Sure.”

Ling Xiao nodded.

He stood up and took the bowl from Yang Linlin.

Looking at the well-presented mung bean sweet soup, he complimented: “I didn’t know you could make sweet soup. That’s impressive.”

Yang Linlin said somewhat embarrassed: “I, I was learning how to make it for the first time.”

She glanced at the books on the table and asked: “What are you reading?”

“Oh, I was just bored and wanted to pass the time, so I randomly picked up some books from the library. By the way, if there are any books you’d like to read, I can bring some back for you next time I pass by.” Ling Xiao asked.

Yang Linlin smiled and shook her head: “I, I can’t calm my mind to read like you can yet.”

“That’s fine. We have plenty of time anyway. When the weather’s nice, you can go out for a walk.”

But the next moment, Ling Xiao cautioned: “But if you encounter any danger, don’t wander off randomly. I’ll come find you.”

Hearing these words, Yang Linlin felt warmth in her heart.

Last time, in her dream, this man had abandoned her and left alone.

But now in this real world, with only the two of them left, he chose to protect her.

Yang Linlin was somewhat moved.

‘It seems Chen Ting was right – he’s a responsible, good guy.’

While she was lost in thought, Ling Xiao took a sip of the sweet soup.

The moment he drank it, he froze.

Seeing this, Yang Linlin worriedly asked: “What’s wrong? Is it not good?”

Ling Xiao first held it in, then drank it all in one gulp before saying: “Ah? No, no, it’s okay.”

Yang Linlin didn’t quite believe Ling Xiao’s words, so she walked into the kitchen and served herself a bowl.

After taking the first sip, she immediately spat it into the trash can.

“Ah! So salty.” Yang Linlin couldn’t stand it and immediately rinsed her mouth with water.

Ling Xiao said with a mix of amusement and exasperation, “Did you mistake salt for sugar?”

Yang Linlin looked up at the salt and sugar on the table, embarrassed: “Sorry, I, I made a mistake. I rarely go into the kitchen, so…”

“Sorry!”

As she spoke, Yang Linlin bowed her head and apologized again.

Ling Xiao, observing her behavior, grew curious: “After spending about a week with you, I’ve noticed something about you.”

Yang Linlin tensed up upon hearing this: “Huh? What is it?”

“You often say ‘sorry’ and ‘excuse me’,” Ling Xiao explained. “Do you usually do this? Even when you’re with Chen Ting?”

Yang Linlin felt shy at the question and stammered, “I’m afraid I’ll become a burden to you, and then you’ll abandon me…”

Ling Xiao was surprised by her words.

He asked with interest, “Why would I abandon you?”

“Because in this kind of environment, I don’t know how to do anything. I’m completely useless. If there’s danger one day, perhaps…” Yang Linlin didn’t finish her sentence.

Ling Xiao finally understood.

So she’s afraid I’ll abandon her!

But such thoughts were understandable.

After all, they were in the apocalypse, where survival was the top priority.

But Ling Xiao reassured her, “Don’t worry, I won’t abandon you.”

Hearing this, Yang Linlin’s eyes immediately lit up.

She cautiously asked, “Really?”

“Really,” Ling Xiao nodded. “Don’t worry.”

He then went to the pot of sweet soup, poured out its contents, and said, “I’ll make a new batch.”

“Sorry about that,” Yang Linlin said before leaving the kitchen.

She sat on the sofa, watching Ling Xiao busy in the kitchen, and smiled sheepishly.

Soon, a new pot of sweet soup was ready.

Ling Xiao served a full bowl and brought it to Yang Linlin: “Here, try it.”

“Okay, thank you.” Yang Linlin took the bowl, sipped the sweet soup, and immediately nodded: “It’s delicious!”

“Good, then drink more. I’m going back to my room to read.” After saying this, Ling Xiao returned to his room.

Thus, the distance between them shortened because of this sweet soup incident.

Early the next morning, Ling Xiao prepared to go out again.

Although the supermarket downstairs had ample supplies, he wanted to vary their diet and planned to check other stores for different ingredients.

As he was about to leave, Yang Linlin seemed hesitant.

Yes, she wanted to go out too.

Since Ling Xiao had saved her, she had stayed indoors without venturing out.

Yang Linlin was afraid to go out.

Remembering what happened during the first two days, she was clearly frightened.

But that’s how people are.

After staying inside for too long, they crave going out.

Just like during school days—after long periods of studying, they want a break, and after long breaks, they want to go back to school.

But Yang Linlin didn’t dare make the request.

Several times, she wanted to ask Ling Xiao to take her along, but each time the words reached her lips, she couldn’t bring herself to say them. Ling Xiao noticed the odd expression on Yang Linlin’s face and asked, “What’s wrong?”

Yang Linlin hesitated at first, then cautiously inquired, “Can I go out with you?”
