After bringing Yang Linlin home, Ling Xiao parked his motorcycle.
He looked around and eventually found a ladies’ bicycle.
Patting the seat to dust it off, Ling Xiao then said to Yang Linlin, “Come on, get on. I’ll teach you.”
Looking at the bicycle, Yang Linlin recalled her recent fall and felt a bit fearful.
Ling Xiao seemed to sense her hesitation and reassured her, “It’s fine, don’t worry. I’ll hold you steady while you ride slowly.”
Hearing his words, Yang Linlin made up her mind and sat on the bicycle.
“That’s right, pedal slowly, keep both hands on the handlebars, and start moving forward. I’ll hold the bike from behind.”
Ling Xiao spent the entire afternoon teaching Yang Linlin how to ride.
Soon, Yang Linlin no longer needed Ling Xiao’s support and could balance on her own, riding forward slowly.
She was thrilled.
Yang Linlin looked back at Ling Xiao and said, “It’s really not that hard.”
“See, I told you. You were just scared before. But it’s strange—why did your dad hit you when you fell learning to ride? Isn’t it often said that daughters are their fathers’ little sweethearts?” Ling Xiao asked casually.
Upon hearing this, Yang Linlin’s expression changed slightly.
She smiled faintly and explained, “My dad doesn’t like me very much. He prefers my younger brother.”
That one sentence immediately made Ling Xiao understand something.
He wanted to apologize but didn’t know what to say.
So, he changed the subject instead: “Alright, now ride slowly to the opposite side, make the turn, and then ride back.”
“Okay~”
Regaining her composure, Yang Linlin focused her attention back on learning to ride.
Ling Xiao watched her cautious demeanor.
He thought to himself that her childhood might have been heavily influenced by an environment that favored sons over daughters.
“I should take some time to understand her better.”
Soon, as night fell, Yang Linlin’s bicycle lesson had to be paused for the day.
On their way home, Yang Linlin was clearly in high spirits.
It was evident that this had been her happiest day in a long time.
Seeing the smile on her face, Ling Xiao felt happy too.
Suddenly, Yang Linlin looked at Ling Xiao and asked, “Brother Ling Xiao, do we have vegetable seeds at the supermarket?”
“Probably not. Why do you ask?” Ling Xiao replied.
“I want to find some vegetable seeds and grow some vegetables. After all, the food in our freezer is limited, and we need to find ways to store more,” Yang Linlin shared her idea.
Hearing this, Ling Xiao was somewhat surprised.
He knew this was a dream game. So, he only thought to stockpile about six months’ worth of food.
But Yang Linlin was different.
Her long-term considerations were for a lifetime.
Compared to her, his own thinking was indeed limited.
Moreover, growing vegetables could help distract Yang Linlin.
This would also be beneficial for their future life.
So, Ling Xiao immediately agreed, “Alright, I’ll go look for seeds tomorrow, and we can grow vegetables together.”
“Great!~”
Yang Linlin laughed happily.
Suddenly, she felt that life had gained a little more hope.
Early the next morning, Ling Xiao went out.
He needed to search the area for agricultural supply markets.
Soon, he found a shop with plenty of vegetable seeds.
To diversify their meals, he brought back seeds for all the commonly eaten vegetables. After finishing up, Ling Xiao took a walk around the nearby area.
Eventually, he found an orchard plot just one kilometer away from home.
“This land looks good—it should be able to grow plenty of vegetables.”
Immediately after, Ling Xiao headed home with the seeds.
Yang Linlin, who had been waiting at home, heard the sound of the door opening. She stood up at once.
“So? Did you find the seeds?”
Faced with Yang Linlin’s anticipation, Ling Xiao naturally didn’t disappoint her. He opened his backpack and took out a bag of seeds, saying, “Here! I brought a lot.”
“Great!” Yang Linlin exclaimed happily. “So where should we plant them?”
“I found an orchard plot not far from here, about a kilometer away,” Ling Xiao indicated. “Come on, I’ll take you to see it.”
“Okay!”
As Ling Xiao drove the motorcycle, he and Yang Linlin planned the route: “First, go straight here, then turn right, and then left.”
Soon, they arrived at the orchard plot.
Looking at the land before her, Yang Linlin was even eager to start planting right away.
“Not yet. This land hasn’t been cultivated for a while. We need to loosen the soil first, add some fertilizer, and enrich it,” Ling Xiao explained.
The two of them got straight to work.
Ling Xiao took charge of loosening the soil with a hoe, while Yang Linlin followed behind, watering.
They spent the entire morning preparing the selected one-acre orchard plot.
“Let’s divide it into four rows, each for a different crop,” Ling Xiao suggested.
“So what should we plant in the first row?” Yang Linlin asked.
Ling Xiao thought for a moment and then said, “Let’s plant cabbage.”
“Okay.”
“What about the second row?”
“Tomatoes.”
“And the third row?”
“Cucumbers. But both tomatoes and cucumbers will need manual trellising later,” Ling Xiao replied.
Yang Linlin was puzzled: “Why?”
“Tomato stems are relatively thin and can’t support the weight of the tomatoes, so they need a frame to hold them up.”
Ling Xiao picked up a small branch and explained, “Later, we can use a wooden stick or bamboo pole, insert it into the soil near the tomato plant, and tie the tomato stem to the stick.”
Yang Linlin had no idea about these planting techniques.
After all, she hadn’t experienced farming or transplanting seedlings when she was young.
So she deeply admired Ling Xiao’s knowledge.
This also strengthened her resolve to start reading more books.
Once everything was ready, the two worked together, sowing the seeds in the soil.
While watering the seeds, they even started playing around.
Ling Xiao dipped his hand in water and flicked it toward Yang Linlin’s face.
Splashed with water, Yang Linlin naturally wasn’t going to let her senior off easily.
She picked up a ladle and kept splashing water at Ling Xiao.
“Ah! Senior, you’re so mean!”
But before long, she was whining.
“Wuwu ┭┮﹏┭┮ I’m sorry, Senior.”
In the end, Yang Linlin couldn’t withstand Ling Xiao’s attacks and surrendered.
But Ling Xiao proactively handed her the ladle and said, “Here, I’ll give you a chance to get back at me.”
He knew that since she was a girl, he needed to go easy on her.
That’s just how it is when interacting with girls.
A balanced rhythm—sometimes fast, sometimes slow, sometimes tense, sometimes relaxed.
Hearing this, Yang Linlin picked up the ladle, overjoyed. But in the end, she still poured out the water from the spoon, then placed it upside down on Ling Xiao’s head: “Alright, revenge accomplished!”
Ling Xiao was somewhat surprised.
He hadn’t expected Yang Linlin to ultimately let him off.
He turned to watch Yang Linlin as she left the orchard.
At this moment, she was walking carefully.
Afraid of stepping on the soil where seeds had just been planted.
Bathed in the afterglow of the sunset, her figure could indeed capture the hearts of many boys.
Even Ling Xiao couldn’t help but take a couple more glances at her.
Just then, Yang Linlin turned back to look at Ling Xiao, a smile spreading across her face as she said sweetly: “Senior, let’s go home~”
Hearing this, Ling Xiao nodded and replied: “Okay.”
Then he tossed the spoon in his hand aside and walked toward Yang Linlin’s direction.
