- Chapter 15 - Stormy Weather, Saving the Vegetable Field
Since Yang Linlin started growing vegetables, her attention had been almost entirely devoted to that vegetable plot.
Every morning after breakfast, she would ride her bicycle to the vegetable garden.
After roughly two hours of tending, she would obediently return home to cook.
Although her cooking skills were admittedly not great.
Fortunately, Ling Xiao would always return just before mealtime to teach her some cooking techniques and insights.
During this period, Yang Linlin made significant progress in both vegetable cultivation and cooking.
Days passed like this, one after another.
Simple and fulfilling.
On the other hand, Ling Xiao found numerous English-related books.
This was what Yang Linlin wanted.
She had been preparing for the Test for English Majors-Band 8.
Planning to take the exam during her senior year.
Then she opened her eyes to find the world gone.
But one shouldn’t remain idle.
So, reminded by Ling Xiao, Yang Linlin continued her studies.
The two settled into an easy rhythm together.
Now and then, they’d trade a few sharp words—more teasing than fighting.
One morning, Ling Xiao approached the calendar.
He crossed off the date.
It had been over two months since he entered the dreamscape.
During these two months, they had adapted to the rhythm of life in this post-apocalyptic world.
In just over a month, he would be able to complete the mission.
Then his Lifespan would increase.
Thinking of this, Ling Xiao couldn’t help but feel excited.
Compared to the first Dream Simulation, with planes and shells filling the sky that left him traumatized for days after waking up.
This second Dream Simulation, although everyone in the world had disappeared, at least daily life was quite comfortable.
Ling Xiao always felt that the game wouldn’t let you pass so easily – there would inevitably be some difficulty-level challenges appearing mysteriously.
Just then, Yang Linlin exclaimed “Oh no!” from the bathroom.
Hearing this, Ling Xiao immediately went to the bathroom door and asked anxiously, “What’s wrong? Linlin.”
“Seems like the power’s out,” Yang Linlin explained. “The water isn’t hot either.”
“I’ll go downstairs to check.”
Saying this, Ling Xiao went downstairs.
He went to the generator room to inspect the generator.
“Turns out we’re out of fuel,” Ling Xiao observed, discovering that the kerosene in the generator had been completely consumed.
And the storage in the generator room was nearly depleted.
So Ling Xiao returned home and told Yang Linlin in the bathroom, “The generator is out of fuel. I’m going to the gas station to get some.”
“Okay~ Be careful,” Yang Linlin replied from the bathroom.
Now whenever Ling Xiao went out, Yang Linlin would say this.
At first it might have just been polite words, but as their communication deepened, it gradually became genuine concern.
Though Ling Xiao felt Yang Linlin didn’t need to worry so much.
In this world, everyone had disappeared.
What danger could there possibly be?
Because the most dangerous thing was humans themselves.
He tied three to five fuel cans to his motorcycle and left.
Arriving at the gas station, Ling Xiao picked up the fuel nozzle and began filling the cans.
“Fortunately there’s a generator across from this gas station, otherwise we wouldn’t even be able to pump gas,” Ling Xiao thought. Looking at the route he had laid, recalling the day he spent setting it up, he still felt a slight ache in his back.
In less than half an hour, Ling Xiao had filled all three fuel cans. Just as he was loading the boxes onto his motorcycle to transport them back, the sky suddenly darkened.
Ling Xiao looked up and couldn’t help but frown. “How did it get so dark all of a sudden?”
Drawing from experience, he knew a storm was approaching.
So he stored the remaining two barrels of oil back at the gas station and prepared to leave with just one barrel.
But the rain seemed unwilling to wait.
Before Ling Xiao could even put on his raincoat, the rain began pouring down.
He quickly took shelter in a nearby shop.
Watching the heavy rain outside, accompanied by flashes of lightning and rumbles of thunder, Ling Xiao grew worried about Yang Linlin at home.
From their time together these past few days, he had come to see Yang Linlin as a particularly timid girl.
So Ling Xiao put on his raincoat and stepped back out into the heavy rain.
He mounted his motorcycle and, amidst the sounds of rain, wind, and thunder, quickly navigated through the streets.
On his way home, Ling Xiao could even feel the stinging pain of the raindrops hitting his face.
This was completely unlike the usual weather in Beijiang!
Ling Xiao gradually realized:
If in the first dreamscape, the invisible enemies and aerial shells were the obstacles to completing the mission, then in this dreamscape, the severe weather was the greatest challenge of this simulation scenario.
“I knew it couldn’t be this simple!”
Compared to the first Dream Simulation which offered five attempts, this one provided no chances for do-overs.
If he died just once, the entire dream game would end.
The Dream Simulation would enter a cooldown period, and he would lose an opportunity to extend his life.
“Hurry home. I refuse to believe there will be an earthquake. Hiding at home definitely won’t kill me.”
Thinking this, Ling Xiao unconsciously twisted the throttle faster.
Soon, he arrived at his building.
After parking his motorcycle, Ling Xiao looked back at the pouring rain and thought that no matter how long it lasted, it had nothing to do with him now.
He carried the oil into the generator room and poured it into the generator.
After completing everything, Ling Xiao took off his raincoat and went upstairs while ruffling his hair.
Opening the door, he began complaining: “Linlin, the rain today is too heavy, too terrifying.”
He turned around and saw that Yang Linlin wasn’t in the living room.
So he looked toward the kitchen.
But clearly, no one was there either.
“Linlin?”
Ling Xiao went to Yang Linlin’s bedroom.
Soon, he had searched the entire apartment but still couldn’t find any trace of Yang Linlin.
Now, Ling Xiao panicked.
He didn’t know where Yang Linlin had gone.
And before going out, he hadn’t heard Yang Linlin mention where she might be going later.
Wait!
Ling Xiao seemed to realize something.
The vegetable patch!
He immediately put on his raincoat and hurried downstairs.
If he wasn’t mistaken, Yang Linlin must be at the vegetable patch right now!
Given her personality, she would definitely be desperately protecting those vegetables.
“That silly girl!”
Ling Xiao felt both anxious and angry.
He turned the key, planning to ride his motorcycle.
But for some reason, the motorcycle kept stalling.
After several attempts, he still couldn’t start it.
With no other choice, Ling Xiao had to run toward the direction of the vegetable patch.
He lowered his head, wiping the rain from his face as he ran.
In the past, with his motorcycle, the one-kilometer distance would be covered in no time.
But now, the rain and strong winds were hindering his progress.
Suddenly, Ling Xiao spotted a bicycle not far away. He immediately stepped on it.
With the help of the bicycle, his speed increased significantly.
Just as he finally reached the vegetable patch, looking out, he saw only a figure in white clothes, covering the plastic film while moving large stones to weigh it down, trying to protect the vegetables beneath.
Despite the rain beating down on her, she did not retreat in the slightest.
But the moment she had just placed the stone, a strong gust of wind flipped the film over, even causing her to fall to the ground.
Seeing this, Ling Xiao rushed over, shouting as he ran, “Linlin!!”
Yang Linlin, her face full of fear and helplessness, immediately turned around upon hearing Ling Xiao’s call.
On her face, rain and tears mingled.
