After leaving home, Ling Xiao rode his motorcycle slowly forward.
The ground was already covered with nearly twenty centimeters of snow.
Speeding up the motorcycle was simply impossible.
Moreover, gusts of north wind, like wild runaway horses, swept debris through the air, lashing his face with a whip-like sting.
If he hadn’t been wearing two pairs of gloves, his hands would probably have gone numb from the cold.
Ling Xiao looked at the trees lining the streets, their frost-covered branches hanging like silver bars, creating a spectacular sight.
The motorcycle eventually arrived beside a gas station.
He struggled to get off the bike and then took out a thermometer to check.
“Damn, it’s already over ten degrees below zero.”
Ling Xiao adjusted his hat and headed toward the generator shed.
Previously, to refuel at the gas station, electricity was needed to pump the fuel. But now, Ling Xiao couldn’t afford to worry about that.
He approached the generator and inspected it.
However, the generator seemed to have malfunctioned due to the extreme cold.
With no other choice, Ling Xiao got back on his motorcycle and continued his search.
The snow continued to fall.
What had been twenty centimeters thick earlier was now close to thirty.
The motorcycle struggled even more.
Ling Xiao knew that if he went any further, the bike wouldn’t have enough fuel for the return trip.
“Forget it, I’ll look for a generator tomorrow,” he muttered, carefully turning the motorcycle around.
Every move now had to be made with extreme caution.
If an accident happened outdoors in this heavy snow, it would likely mean certain death.
While climbing a slope, the motorcycle struggled repeatedly, failing to make it up several times.
The thick snow severely affected the tires’ grip.
Left with no alternative, Ling Xiao turned around again, searching for a different route back.
Fortunately, he was relatively familiar with the area. Using smaller streets, the motorcycle gradually regained a steadier pace.
But at a turn, the bike seemed to hit something.
Ling Xiao had no time to adjust the handlebars. After wobbling a couple of times, the motorcycle went completely out of control.
Ling Xiao was pinned heavily underneath the bike, his elbow slamming hard against a fire hydrant.
For a moment, he felt an excruciating, heart-wrenching pain.
He struggled desperately to get up.
But the motorcycle was firmly pressing down on his lower body, and with his right hand likely injured, his left hand couldn’t push the bike away.
He was completely immobilized.
Ling Xiao mustered all his strength, encouraging himself.
“One!”
“Two!”
“Three!”
But the motorcycle remained firmly in place.
With no other options, he clung to the fire hydrant, trying to pull his legs free.
As time passed, Ling Xiao’s strength gradually waned.
He knew he had to replenish his energy.
Otherwise, in such freezing weather, he would eventually lose all his strength and energy.
He pulled a chocolate bar from his pocket, tore open the wrapper, and took a couple of quick bites.
After resting for a moment, Ling Xiao changed his strategy.
He used his thighs to slightly lift the motorcycle, creating a small gap, then propped it up with his left hand.
His legs immediately began digging through the snow beneath.
Once he had enough space, Ling Xiao could use his feet to push.
“Bang!”
With the combined effort of his left hand and both legs, the motorcycle was finally pushed aside.
Ling Xiao lay on the ground, gasping for breath.
But each breath sent a sharp pain through his lungs as the cold air rushed in. He had no choice but to try to calm his breathing and minimize his energy consumption.
Right now, he desperately longed to return home.
To return to Yang Linlin’s side.
After so many days together, Ling Xiao had developed feelings for Yang Linlin over time.
After all, the two of them lived together every day—it was impossible not to form any emotional attachment.
If he were to die here, Yang Linlin would probably be heartbroken.
So Ling Xiao stubbornly stood up.
He checked his injuries.
Apart from his right arm being immobile, the rest of his body seemed fine.
Ling Xiao guessed the impact must have been quite severe.
He had no choice but to carry his bag with his left hand and walk step by step toward home.
The snow continued to fall.
The depth of the snow on the ground kept accumulating.
Every time Ling Xiao lifted his foot, it felt as heavy as lead.
The immense physical exertion made him gasp for breath.
With every gasp, his energy reserves dwindled significantly.
After walking nearly a kilometer, Ling Xiao couldn’t go on any longer.
He entered a shop, sat down, and waited.
“Just a little longer. Once the snow stops, it’ll be easier,” Ling Xiao thought, watching the snow outside and praying.
In reality, there was no sign of the snow letting up.
Ling Xiao waited in the shop for a full four hours before realizing he couldn’t just sit and wait.
Even if he didn’t die of exhaustion, he would freeze to death in this temperature.
Moreover, he knew that if he didn’t return, Yang Linlin at home would surely worry.
“I can’t let that silly girl worry.”
Gritting his teeth, Ling Xiao tightened his down jacket, stepped out of the shop, and continued walking.
Meanwhile, Yang Linlin was anxiously staring out the window.
It had been over eight hours since Ling Xiao left.
“Why hasn’t he come back yet…?”
Yang Linlin knew that whether Ling Xiao found a generator or not, he would always return for lunch.
After eating, he would go out again.
And he would always be back before dark.
But now it was almost 6 p.m., and there was still no sign of Ling Xiao.
Yang Linlin couldn’t help but worry.
She wanted to go out and look for him.
But she remembered Ling Xiao’s strict warning never to go outside.
For a moment, she was torn in an internal struggle.
In the end, she put on her down jacket, wrapped a scarf around her neck, pulled on a hat, slipped into her high boots, and stepped out.
“Ling Xiao!”
“Brother!”
Once outside, Yang Linlin fully felt the bitter cold of minus twenty degrees Celsius.
The gusts of wind hitting her face felt like being punched.
Ignoring her disheveled state, Yang Linlin scanned her surroundings and followed the route Ling Xiao had taken on his motorcycle.
“Ling Xiao!!”
Yang Linlin called out, but faced with the vast whiteness, she began to panic.
Her eyes reddened, and her mind started conjuring wild thoughts.
“No, Ling Xiao wouldn’t be in trouble.”
As she spoke, tears began to fall.
She kept walking forward.
Night fell, and aside from her flashlight, everything around her was pitch black.
Naturally timid, Yang Linlin was now even more terrified.
But despite her fear, she pressed on.
Her voice trembling, she continued to call out:
“Ling Xiao! Ling Xiao!”
Suddenly, she spotted a small dark figure not far ahead.
This frightened Yang Linlin terribly.
She quickly stepped back, shining her flashlight repeatedly toward it.
Then, a voice came from the other side: “Linlin, stop flashing that thing in my eyes.”
Still trembling with fear, Yang Linlin immediately ran forward upon hearing the voice.
She knew it was Ling Xiao’s voice!
