- Chapter 32 - Chapter 32
“But that’s just a biological thought,” Zhang Liu said as he looked at Anya, who had become wary of him again, and Qin Ruoshuang, who was still staring at him in astonishment.
Rubbing his hands together, he continued, “You two are so pretty, and right now the law doesn’t exactly apply—of course I’m going to have some bad thoughts!”
As he said this, he let out a villainous “hehehe” laugh.
“Zhang Liu… you… you… you…” Anya was so frightened by his words and behavior that her eyes were welling with tears.
She trembled as she huddled next to Qin Ruoshuang, unable to even speak in complete sentences.
Never in her wildest imagination had Anya thought that Zhang Liu—whom she had briefly regarded as a white knight—would suddenly act so disturbingly.
“Zhang Liu, stop scaring Anya,” Qin Ruoshuang said, carefully watching the expression on the boy’s face, especially the barely concealed smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. She sighed and added, “Just get to the point already.”
“Setting a heavy tone,” Zhang Liu said with a grin. Then, his expression gradually turned serious.
Seeing his face change, Anya was still somewhat afraid but obediently sat beside Qin Ruoshuang.
The two of them showed expressions of focused attention.
“I have no intention of doing anything inappropriate to you,” Zhang Liu began seriously. “Because to me, the most important thing is getting off this island.”
He pointed at the hard ground beneath them and took a deep breath, then said in a very solemn tone, “At this point, the fact that no rescue has come is something we have to accept.”
“So, based on our earlier plan, we now need to start actively saving ourselves. Best case, we escape this place. Worst case, we survive here long term.”
“At the moment, we don’t have any tools—just manpower. So I need you to face reality and stop thinking about love or romance!”
With those few statements, Zhang Liu completely squashed any lingering fantasies the girls might have had.
But there was one thing he didn’t say aloud:
If something really did happen between them on this island and someone got pregnant and gave birth, the cost would be unimaginably high.
He took a deep breath, calmed himself, and then, seeing the two girls now looking serious, continued:
“Right now, we have a stable water source, shelter, a fire, and the sea provides basic food. In survival terms, we’ve met the basic conditions for staying alive.”
“But, if we want to build a seaworthy boat, these things aren’t enough. And if we want to survive here long-term, it’s definitely not enough either.”
As he spoke, Zhang Liu looked toward the outside of the cave.
It was already night, and everything was pitch black.
Even so, through the layers of darkness, his gaze fixed on the tallest peak in the surrounding mountain range.
That highest peak was his goal—to assess the real situation from a vantage point.
Furthermore, the wood and vines in the mountains and the forest were essential resources for building a large boat.
“I only have two requests for you.”
“First: on this deserted island, we give up all distinctions between men and women. We do everything we can to survive, until we get out of here!”
“Second: before we’re rescued, I’ll do my best to protect and take care of you. But after we get out—I hope you’ll repay me!”
Looking at the puzzled expressions on the faces of the two girls, Zhang Liu began to explain:
“For you, going back to civilization means you can still rely on your family background to live a privileged life.”
“But for me, I’d be completely out of touch with the times. Even if I went back, my future wouldn’t be promising. My two younger sisters might face drastic changes in their lives next year because we can’t afford tuition.”
“My return would undoubtedly add more burden to my family.”
“So, when that time comes, I only hope you can lend me some money to help me through the most difficult transition period.”
By the end of his speech, his expression was somewhat depressed.
For Zhang Liu, the only reason he had to go back was because of his two sisters. Otherwise, he wouldn’t want to leave this place even in a few years.
After years of being detached from society, returning to life there would be like a slow death for an ordinary person without even a high school diploma.
“So, Zhang Liu, do you have any plans?”
Zhang Liu’s words were like a reassurance pill for Qin Ruoshuang.
She now fully understood that Zhang Liu bore no ill intentions toward her or Anya.
Moreover, Qin Ruoshuang agreed with Zhang Liu’s ultimate goal: to escape hardship.
Still, she hadn’t learned from Zhang Liu what she should do next.
In a similar state of thought, after hearing Zhang Liu’s lengthy explanation, Anya sat up straight, her face expressing a sense of reliability as if to say, “Leave everything to me after we get out of this situation.”
“First, we need to gather resources,” Zhang Liu said, placing a thick log into the campfire and watching it catch fire quickly. He began outlining the plan for tomorrow.
“Tomorrow, I’ll go to the beach and the forest to look for food during the day.”
“You two will split up: Qin Ruoshuang, you’ll stay here to tend the fire and store water, while Anya, you come with me to the beach. We’ll collect more giant clam shells and the like for water storage.”
“Understood,” Qin Ruoshuang and Anya nodded in unison.
“The purpose of this is to ensure I can safely go to the plane wreckage afterward,” Zhang Liu said, looking at the two of them. “Even a rusty piece of metal can be used to cut fish or meat. Imagine what we can make out of an entire plane wreckage! The materials on it are things we can’t get in this wilderness.”
“Right! How did I not think of that?”
Hearing Zhang Liu’s words, Anya slapped her own head, suddenly enlightened.
At the same time, she realized Zhang Liu’s critical role in their group.
His physical labor might be secondary—whatever a guy can do, two determined girls could manage too.
But the ability to plan and think ahead? That was something only Zhang Liu brought to the table.
“Starting tonight, I suggest we take turns keeping watch.”
Zhang Liu didn’t stop there. After taking a sip of boiled water and spitting out a few grains of sand, he continued:
“We all heard the wolf howls at night. Before, we couldn’t do much because it was pitch black. But now, we have a campfire.
“One reason to keep watch is to ensure the fire doesn’t go out. The other is to prepare for any emergencies.”
Nodding as they listened, Anya was now full of admiration for Zhang Liu’s arrangements. Looking into his clear eyes, her respect for him grew even more, replacing any past sense of superiority due to their different backgrounds.
“I’ll take the first watch tonight,” Qin Ruoshuang smiled and said. “You’ve both been taking care of me all this time; it’s my turn to do something now.”
“No, I suggest Anya and I take turns instead,” Zhang Liu shook his head, rejecting Qin Ruoshuang’s offer. He turned to Anya and said, “You’ll eventually have your period. For now, you can help Qin Ruoshuang with the watch. She can return the favor when it’s your turn.”
“Then… what about you?” Anya fidgeted nervously, her fair hands clasping and unclasping as she looked at Zhang Liu.
“Me? What about me?” Zhang Liu asked, puzzled.
After hesitating for a long time, Anya finally expressed her concern: “If this is the arrangement, then you will have to keep watch every night, which means you won’t be able to sleep well…”
Zhang Liu looked at Anya for a moment, frowning.
Back at school, he was used to being Anya’s “tool” because she could afford it.
But now, this girl still wanted to make him a night watchman!
“Anya, after my period, we’ll take turns keeping watch,” Qin Ruoshuang chimed in. Hearing her, Anya’s cheeks began to turn red. She knew she was worrying in the wrong direction.
“Ah! Yes! In fact, I’m still thinking about taking ten days off a month.” Zhang Liu said earnestly, misunderstanding Anya’s intentions. “So, it’s already late tonight. Why don’t you two get some rest first?”
